In Vitro Fertilization is Murder
A first and possible final draft of an editorial for a paper I'm involved with. Prease feel free to comment.
It’s time to revisit a controversy that, like so many others, shouldn’t be. In particular, the morality of embryonic stem cell research. It’s of obvious practical use, promising many medical advances (repairing damaged or malfunctioning tissue, etc., as caused by diseases like Parkinson’s, diabetes, and other diseases), and it’s not as though our refusal to do life-saving research will stop others (e.g. the South Koreans, who have recently made great, well-publicized strides).
There are three major arguments against research using embryonic cells: first, it is unnecessary, since stem cells can be obtained from adult donors; second, we already have stem cell lines for research; third it is immoral regardless, since it entails the murder of human beings. The first claim is half true – stem cells can be obtained from adult donors, but they are substantially different from embryonic cells, and do not have the same potential to develop into any cell type given the right stimuli. Meanwhile, existing cell lines are degrading with age and their already limited usefulness will eventually come to an end, so arguments that creation of new cell lines by extracting stem cells from embryos is unnecessary are misinformed at best and disingenuous at worst.
So, the real objection is that extracting stem cells from embryos, a process which does kill any embryo involved, is the murder of innocent human beings. This is also the point where “pro-life” activists try to sow as much confusion as possible. Very few people object to in-vitro fertilization, yet for each child born via in-vitro fertilization, roughly 16 other embryos are discarded, put into storage indefinitely, donated to research, or (rarely) given to other couples. However, storage is expensive and implanting thawed embryos is relatively ineffective and often involves overcoming emotional blocks, so the vast majority of embryos are discarded. American Medical News reported in 2003 that there were probably around 400,000 stored embryos at that time, which gives us some idea of the number of embryos that must be discarded as medical waste.
Now, if one believes that embryos are human beings, deserving of most if not all rights a human being should have, then one should oppose in-vitro fertilization even more than one opposes stem cell research or abortion – each and every in-vitro fertilization means not one dead baby, but more than a dozen! This is without even mentioning the hundreds of thousands of spontaneous abortions (i.e. miscarriages) that occur every year; a quick Google search turns up no results for research to end them under normal circumstances (it’s true that people are researching, for example, the effects of pesticide exposure and incidence of spontaneous abortion). It is distressing indeed that so many deaths seem to have escaped the notice of “pro-life” activists.
The reason that in-vitro fertilization is not illegal is because destroying embryos is not morally or legally equivalent to killing a human being, and the reason that “pro-lifers” oppose embryonic stem cell research is that the same arguments used to undermine it can be used to undermine womens’ reproductive rights. In an effort to keep women from having control over their bodies, people like Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito are perfectly willing to argue that women of any age ought to have no more rights than 13 year old girls. It’s sad and unsurprising that they’d be willing to sacrifice the sick and dying as well.

106 Comments:
First, I agree with your politics and reasoning...pro-lifers' priorities and arguments are skewed (to put it nicely).
Second, however, you aren't really making an offensive argument which defeats pro-lifers'. All you show is that pro-lifers ought to also be opposed to IVF and be as horrified by miscarriages as abortions. A staunch (and reasonable) pro-lifer would simply have to concede those points, and she could rationally maintain her beliefs with respect to embryonic stem cell research.
Third, what does the following phrase have to do with the point of the article? "The reason that in-vitro fertilization is not illegal is because destroying embryos is not morally or legally equivalent to killing a human being, and the reason that “pro-lifers” oppose embryonic stem cell research is that the same arguments used to undermine it can be used to undermine womens’ reproductive rights." The second part of the phrase is particulary confusing, and might just need to be re-worded.
Finally, as a diatribe, I understand the piece. However, you might dissect the rationale for WHY IVF is not equivalent to murder, and compare it to the pro-lifers' arguments as to why abortion is murder. Then at least you attack a central position of the pro-life camp, and in the process show why their objections to embryonic stem cell research (and abortions) are ridiculous.
Just my 2 cents...it was an interesting read though, I'd never quite made the connection to IVF as explicitly as you have.
Cheers,
Jeff

Though I agree it was in interesting read, your facts seem to be as skewed as the ones you purport to refute.
I am a liberal agnostic, who is strongly pro-life. I base this on the fundamental belief that one's body should not be interfered with by others, and that there is no rational or scientific basis to conclude that a fetus is anyone's but its own. Just considering the differing DNA renders the argument that it somehow should be considered the body or property of the mother ridiculous on its face. The law (currently) disagrees, I admit, but that is one of the ways in which I strive to change it.
Stem cell research is promising, and should be pursued, but not at the cost of creating people just to kill them. The argument put forth looks to pro-lifers as: "If all it took to find a cure for Alzheimer's was to shoot the next 10,000 babies born, would you do it? Why not? You're anti-cure!"
You state: "The reason that in-vitro fertilization is not illegal is because destroying embryos is not morally or legally equivalent to killing a human being." First, IVF per se isn't murder. It's the creation of humans, not their death. Disposing of the fertilized eggs is, and that is what's reprehensible, and should change, yes.
Miscarriages are unfortunate, but if they're spontaneous (i.e. not induced), then that's hardly murder. It is a death, and a tragedy, but as a "staunch and reasonable pro-lifer", it's no more horrifying than cancer, AIDS, or heart disease. It can hardly be considered something that has "escaped the notice of “pro-life” activists."
Finally, "In an effort to keep women from having control over their bodies, people like Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito are perfectly willing to argue that women of any age ought to have no more rights than 13 year old girls." To respond: in an effort to keep people from having to take responsibility for their decisions, so-called "pro-choice" advocates are perfectly willing to argue that unborn children ought to have nore more rights than a 10-cent trinket bought on a moment's whim.

I'm actually doing a paper this week in my Ethics class about the decisions an infertile couple should make from a Christian perspective, where life is highly valued and at the same time where one should draw the line as to how to approach it in a morally and godly manner. Of course the dilemma here is one of whether or not to pursue 'artificial' means in order to conceive a child as opposed to taking the stance that being infertile may mean that it's simply not God's will, whether that means just for the time being or even at all. You see, this comes from the notion that we don't ALWAYS know what's best for us, and because God does in His omnipotence, we have to trust that it's for a reason. That's the essence of living by faith.
Anyhow, there are Christians who will both oppose and side with IVF. There are arguments for both sides. At first I thought it may be pretty harmless, but if a dozen or more embryos are killed or frozen just for the sake of one, that does not sound like an efficient nor moral way to create life. It's like the Utilitarian point of view, where one's view is the 'most good for the most people.' If IVF is giving people the ability to conceive and have babies and find happiness so to speak, then it must be good! But in light of this info, it doesn't sound good at all. I'm glad to find some info here to write on and thank you for that.
By the way, I heard that using Adult stem cells is far more beneficial than using Embryonic stem cells. I've read some testimonies online here and there where there is already great success with ASC's. If that's true I guess my question is with all the success they've had, why even continue to pursue embryonic cell research? Adult stem cells have the capability to clone pretty much any organ and reproduce it, is that correct?
Again you might have more info on that, I'm not trying to argue my point here but simply inquire. Good luck with your article!!

ftz - the point re: spontaneous abortions is that for intellectual consistency, you'd hope that pro-lifers raising a ruckus about abortion would also try to find ways to save all those poor embryos who are being miscarried/flushed down the toilet with tampons/etc. - arguing that it's just too bad is analagous to arguing that we shouldn't try to prevent deaths in car accidents or from horrible diseases because, well, it's not like it's murder, right? Pro-lifers, and especially pro-life foundations which have money to burn setting up giant billboards, etc. on the campus of the university I attend don't seem at all concerned with a full third to half of all "children" conceived who die needlessly every year. Arguing that it's "natural" only works for Christian Scientists.
As for differing DNA, what a joke. Identical twins are the same person too, right? How about tumors? They're genetically different.
naasson - as far as I know, adult stem cells are pretty good at differentiating into tissues, so you can do things like repair muscle damage, grow scar tissue over wounds, etc., but I don't think they're able to grow into full organs for transplants, etc. If that's possible, it's obviously preferable, but as far as I know, it isn't.
I could be wrong, though - researchers came up with a line of mice that could regrow damaged heart tissue (rather than simply scarring over it), lost toes, etc., so it's not like embryonic research is the only path we can or should take. It just kills me that something with so much promise is thrown away for no good reason.

Re "intellectual consistency":
It's not about consistency, it's about priority. Saying "death caused by deliberate action is worse than death by natural causes, and we should work on the former first" isn't at all inconsistent with a pro-life point of view. Once abortion is legally classed as murder, then yes, I would hope that all of that time, effort, and money is put towards saving those children who are miscarried.
I don't see anyone here, including myself, arguing that "it's just too bad" or that nothing should be done.
Re DNA:
You have misunderstood. I did not state nor imply that person-hood is defined solely by DNA. A common fallacy is to assume that "if A, then B" implies "if !A, then !B". It doesn't. The argument that "if the DNA is very different, then they are not the same person" does not imply "if the DNA is not very different, then they are the same person". Compare and contrast "necessary" and "sufficient".
Yes, tumors have different DNA from the originating organism, but only by mutation. The genetic aspects of fertilization cannot be considered a "mutation", and are hardly comparable.
